Trompe L'Oeil & Faux Finishes

Tromp L'Oeil: to fool the eye. A Tromp L'Oeil painting is done with such attention to fine detail and lighting that it appears real at first, and sometimes at second, look. It can be difficult to tell, in a two dimension photo, what is real and what is painted.

Faux Finish: A surface painted to look other than what it is. Plaster can be painted to look like marble, granite, or other stones or cement, or malachite, lapis lazuli or other semiprecious stone used, both faux and real, in ornate buildings around the world.
Many of Cathie's Murals incorporate faux finishes as wood, stone, or tile.
